Summer heatwaves

Last week’s LME courses in New York were well timed, managing to come after the recent New York heatwave and missing the hottest day in the UK since records began.  The US courses typically have a smaller group size which allows for more tailored discussions and time to delve deeper into the topics raised in the course materials.  We had excellent engagement in discussions and occasionally the air-conditioning couldn’t quite limit the heat generated.

“Definitely a course I would recommend to novice learners regarding the LME. provides a great foundation of knowledge to move forward with any LME learning or training.” Traxys

“Trainer was excellent – deep practical knowledge, and very effective teaching style and demeanor.” Hydro Aluminium

“Very valuable. Trainer was amazing.” Rio Tinto

Lucky mascot

Meet Sir Gregor the goat, the new lucky mascot for Euromoney’s sale force.  He was most recently seen supervising the preparations and broadcast of the second LME Education webinar.

It takes all sorts

Frequently participants on LME training courses comment on the diversity of attendees.  This week’s attendees at the London course were spread right across the metals value chain, and associated services. There were different backgrounds, nationalities and intriguing previous careers, including a former policeman now working at a regulator. The diversity makes for interesting discussions which definitely enhance the learning experience.

“Came away with much better knowledge of LME and hedging”, Less Common Metals

“Explained clearly in layman’s language.  Plenty of examples”, Société Générale

“Good teaching language used (one of the best I’ve seen)”, Epoch Capital

And the winner is …..

When you know you are not in the running for the “Deal of the Year”, you can always go for the “Best Dressed”…..

Our Managing Director was shocked to be picked out as the winner at the recent TXF conference on global commodity finance in Amsterdam. It’s just as well the guitar was inflatable as she really can’t play.  The flower power theme made for a great atmosphere over the few days.

Got a spare 30 minutes?

We had a great response to our first webinar run in partnership with the London Metal Exchange and Euromoney.  The webinar gave a brief overview of basic risk concepts and how risk could be addressed using futures and options.  Live feedback from the participants who already use LME instruments told us that 43% were only using futures while the remaining 57% were combining options with futures in their risk management strategies.

Visit our webinar page to find links to listen again and to register for the next webinar on 25 June which will discuss hedging with futures in more detail.

“Basic principles well explained and questions were answered confidently”, Retired LME broker

Sell in May and go away

Does that saying hold true for commodities?  Euromoney’s Commodities Derivatives course explored investment strategies and risk management techniques this week.  Discussions ranged from geopolitics in energy markets, factors affecting your daily cappuccino and the impact of technology innovations.

“Nice structure (agenda). Useful content.  Professional trainer – able to explain in a simple structured way” ABN AMRO Bank

“Perfect for a derivative overview”,
Al Qaryan Group

“Enlightening.  It shed more light on all the grey areas regarding the subject matter.  Fantastic trainer.” Sterling Bank

This course will also be held in Singapore (15-17 October) and London (25-27 November).

Toronto Teach-in

A huge thank you goes to Eugene Lee of Hudbay Minerals for coordinating a series of London Metal Exchange courses in Toronto last week. Instead of travelling to attend a public course, Eugene worked with the LME to devise a course customised to the needs of metal and concentrate sellers and hosted the courses in partnership with other producers. Representatives from four companies attended, and familiar faces from other LME training courses also attended the networking event. It was an intense few days, but feedback has been great.

“The course was great and Emma’s enthusiasm for the industry and subject was engaging. I learned a lot during the three days and will be taking back this knowledge to my workplace.”
Senior accountant

New products, new materials

To complement the launch of the latest cash-settled futures last month, the LME refreshed the introductory training courses. This week’s course attendees were the guinea pigs for the revised content.  Judging by the conversations during breaks and the formal course feedback, the materials were well received.  Inevitably one or two typos had been missed – one in particular gave rise to much hilarity – and these will be addressed for future courses.

“I found the examples very useful”
Louis Dreyfus Company

“Very good training. Lots of (new) information.”
Autoliv

“Very interesting, very clear.  Worth the money!”
Fundinio

Seasonal Sparkles

The last LME introductory training course of the year took place in New York last week.  We enjoyed a top class location on Fifth Avenue close to the twinkling Christmas lights of the Bryant Park Christmas market.  It was a relatively small group, with a good cross-section of market sectors, which allowed for plenty of individual attention and exploration of topics outside the core course.

“One of the best classes every attended”, Hartree Partners

Safe and sound

The elegant façade of a grand Dutch canalside house hides a historical treasure – the oldest vault in Amsterdam. Nestled in the lower levels of a former Deutsche Bank building, and hidden behind a false door, the vault was an appropriate setting for the bankers attending a course on commodity derivatives, commodity finance and tripartite agreements.

Once again, EJJ International teamed up with Bethan Davies, an independent legal consultant, to deliver a tailored program to meet the client’s requirements, which was well received.

If you would like to attend a similar course, our three day commodity derivative training course gives an in-depth overview of all the main commodity sectors: metals, oil and gas, and agricultural products, plus techniques for stabilising cash flows, collateralising finance and monetising market views.  To join us in London on 14-16 November click here.
