The best laid plans

It is when we are tested that we prove our worth.  So it was with last week’s London Metal Exchange / Euromoney Learning courses.  The courses had to be rescheduled on short notice.  Huge thanks go to those behind the scenes at Euromoney and the LME for sorting out logistics, and to the attendees for their patience and understanding.  Nobody missed flights, nobody missed out on courses they had booked and nobody missed their visit to the ring.  The last day incorporated virtual attendees for the first LME hybrid course.  There was a definite sense of achievement mingled with relief at the end of the week.

The next courses are scheduled for 10-13 October which coincides with LME Week. This is the most popular session of the year, so early booking is highly recommended.

Registration links for all LME courses can be found on the Upcoming Courses page.

Full house

Last month’s London Bullion Market Association (“LBMA”) training course on Responsible Sourcing proved popular.  The refineries were well represented, plus the group included several other sectors of the supply chain.  The virtual format encourages discussions alongside the formal course content, and there were many helpful insights shared during the workshop sessions.

“an exceptional learning experience”

“the interactive learning approach, involving case studies, enhanced understanding and facilitated practical application”

“it was a great experience to discuss with different participant from all around the world and see their views”

“exceeded expectations”

For those that missed out, the next responsible sourcing course is scheduled for 1st November.  You can find registration links for all public courses on Upcoming Courses, or get in touch to arrange a private session.

Somewhere beginning with S

It seemed as if coming from a city or country beginning with S was a prerequisite for joining last week’s London Metal Exchange  (“LME”) virtual session on cash-settled futures, with Singapore, São Paulo and South Africa all represented.  While we are all enjoying the return to in-person learning, the virtual delivery of this 3-hour session was ideal for such a geographically diverse group of attendees.

The cash-settled futures course covers the contracts which use assessments published by price reporting agencies to determine the value of the contract at settlement.  The contract range includes steel scrap, rebar and hot-rolled coil, as well as lithium hydroxide, alumina and aluminium used beverage can scrap.

“Excellent course for anyone who is new to the trading world.”

“Trainer is very knowledgeable and able to bring in examples whenever concepts are explained”

The next public run is scheduled for 14th September, or you can arrange a private course at a time and date of your choosing by contacting education@lme.com.

Registration links for all LME courses can be found on the Upcoming Courses page.

What is a swap?

A seemingly simple question, but it took a bit of explaining during this week’s virtual London Bullion Market Association (“LBMA”) training course.

Do you know what a swap is?

Have you heard of a forward swap?

What is the difference between borrowing and lending on the swap?

And where do lease rate swaps fit in?

“Excellent delivery and presentation of materials”
“Very engaging and interesting throughout. A good balance of sessions vs mini breaks.”

Say “cheese(cake)”

Last week’s London Metal Exchange / Euromoney Learning courses were at the Voco Hotel (formerly the Hilton Hotel) in Singapore,  The small group bonded quickly and there were many substantive discussions alongside the core materials of the course.

There was also time to sample the (now renamed) hotel’s famous cheesecake.  It was demolished before the final group photograph, proving that its reputation is justified.

Great course with a skilled instructor”

“It’s led to a deeper understanding of metals derivatives offered by the LME”

“Opens up eyes towards the physical side of things, warehousing and ring trading”

The courses will be delivered virtually in half-day sessions over 5-9 June with the next classroom courses taking place in London on 11-14 July.  Registration links can be found on the Upcoming Courses page.

EUROMONEY10

It’s not often a training course has its own catchphrase, but that was exactly what happened during last week’s London Metal Exchange / Euromoney Learning courses.  It started when a broker offered a discount on all broking fees to course attendees provided they entered the discount code EUROMONEY10 when opening an account.  The code became a running joke, and the discount was demanded on everything from warehouse rents, to smelting charges and physical premiums.  Courses run best when there is fun in the room alongside the formal learning.

“Excellent course, especially for those with little LME knowledge“

“The visit to the LME to view the ring trading was an invaluable experience”

“Thoroughly enjoyable and highly recommended”

The next classroom courses are scheduled for 16-17 May in Singapore and 11-14 July in London.  The courses will also be delivered virtually in half-day sessions over 5-9 June.  Registration links can be found on the Upcoming Courses page.

Follow the gold

This week’s London Bullion Market Association (“LBMA”) training courses were hosted at the LBMA’s offices, which meant networking and learning could be combined.  Attendees had fun passing a fake gold bar and bank notes back and forth across the boardroom table to demonstrate how metal and payments move between market participants.  The responsible sourcing afternoon took advantage of the smaller group to delve deeper during discussion sessions, teasing out practical ways of applying the guidance.

“Incredibly useful and enlightening”

“A course which was at no time boring and involved every participant actively”

“Complicated market dynamics explained in a clear way, and learning reinforced through a practical workshop.  Learned a lot. Thank you!”

The next Loco London courses will run on 23 & 24 May, and Responsible Sourcing will return on 23 June.  All details can be found via the links on Upcoming Courses.

Back at the Ring

Last week’s London Metal Exchange / Euromoney Learning training courses included a visit to the Ring for first time since the outbreak of Covid. Watching the five minute sessions for the different metals brought the theory discussed in the classroom to life.  Liquidity differences between metals and the increased engagement as the time ticked down to the final bells were clearly visible.

“It was great to be able to go to the Ring to see it live”

“Well organized and focused”

“It’s helped massively – I’ve learned a whole lot”

The next classroom courses are scheduled for 18-21 April in London and a virtual session will be offered 5-9 June.  Registration links can be found on the Upcoming Courses page.

Off and running

The London Metal Exchange‘s training year got off to a flying start today with a dozen attendees on the first course of the year: Introduction to LME Cash-Settled Futures.  This three-hour virtual session delivers a concise overview of the contracts, combined with illustrative examples applying the contracts to real life situations.

“Explanations were clear and effective”

“It was really helpful to see these principles put into practice through exercises”

Is this Dave?

Dave, the cat adopted by the England football team in Qatar (or Cat-ar), has spare time while in quarantine en route to the UK.  Did he join in the most recent London Metal Exchange / Euromoney Learning training course?  Dave didn’t fill out a feedback form, but this is what others thought about the courses:

“A tailormade made course that was well presented, motivating learners to put the knowledge to use”

“The course content and materials are awesome!”

“The course is truly value adding”
